y                                 Jesus is speaking of the abundant life in the tenth chapter of John where he tells us that He came that we might have not just life but wants us to have abundant life.  The Jews all knew of the first Psalm where we read about the godly man being like the tree by the river side. It draws water from the river and therefore bears a good amount of fruit.  We see the same in John 15; the first several verses.  The Lord is speaking of fruit bearing but here the illustration He uses is that of the vine.  In verse eight we are told that the Father is glorified when we bring forth a good amount of fruit.  In Psalm One we read of the godly man and find that as the tree draws water from the river so he spends much time thinking about the Word of  God.

Our problem is that we are apt to think that when we get the abundant life, then the blessings will flow to us.  So we get up a little earlier in the morning to read the Bible or pray a little longer at night andn see no real change in our circumstances, then decide that didn’t work after all, maybe for others, just not for me.  Now notice the tree; the tree never bears fruit for itself, always and only for someone or something other than itself .  An excellent verse on this is Daniel 4:21; “Whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation”.  The tree not only gives food to all who need it but also provides shade for the animals and a home for the birds.  Besides all this,  there is the wood for building or heating, a very small amount of which benefits the tree at all.  This brings to Romans Fifteen where Paul tells us in verse three that even Christ pleased not Himselfimself .  Jesus has set the example and it is always well to follow Him.  In Matthew 21:42 we find that Jesus, though rejected by many has become the corner stone.  The corner stone was always very carefully set, because all other stones for the entire building were laid relative to this stone.  In  the first Psalm we see the importance of  being much in the Bible and meditating on it.

As we look at Philippians 2 4-7 we see the importance of selflessness . Let’s look at a few verses which will explain it “Let nothing be done  through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus; Who, being in the form of God thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made Himself ofno reputation, and took on Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross”.   It mentions here about being involved not just in our own things but we see here the importance of showing an interest in the lives and the activities of others.  It’s  all to easy to be rapt up in my own work and to feel that whatever the other person is involved in is really unimportant  Sometimes this is  especially difficult if we are involved in kingdom work and the other is just doing secular work,  trying to make ends meet.  From I Corinthians 14:30 we  gather that we should even consider the other persons opinion of greater worth than my own.

                   There is one thing we must always keep in mind ; to think of the abundant life tends to the thought that we will receive great blessings for ourselves.  The important thing to remember is that Jesus had in mind was that the abundant life is always for the benefit of others. About fifty years ago there was a hymn, popular at the time.  The hymn writer caught this thought well:

Lord, help me live from day to day

                                                                                                                                      In such a self forgetting way

                                                                                                                                      That even when I kneel to pray

                                                                                                                                      My prayer will be for others

* came to earth He
