THE WORD AND THE SPIRIT

The church, by and large, which means the people in the church are more interested in feeling than in doctrine or what should be called sound teaching.  This has a number of negative results, not the least of which is that many people are not feeling so good.  Notice the large number of psychiatrists we have in our country today.  This is hardly the result of victorious feeling or living.  The Bible is the only Book in all the world which has all the right answers.  It tells me plainly what I must do to be successful and happy in this life but also gives detailed instructions for the life to come.  How do I know that the Bible is true, especially about the future?  That part has to be proven and it is.  The Bible is the only Book in all the world that tells the future with perfect accuracy.  We need only to look at the prophecies already made and fulfilled.  Look at all the religious books written.  There are some, like the Koran which make prophecies of a future which has not yet happened.  The Bible, on the other hand has made detailed predictions of unlikely events which have happened in history.  The more I read and study the Bible, the more I will see this to be true as the Bible itself says in Romans 10:17: “So then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God”.  The Bible itself tells you to check it out.  In Isaiah 41:23 God Himself challenges us: “Show the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods”.  In other words He is telling us to find any other book that can foretell the future.  We find, among all other books, old or new, religious or otherwise there is no other.  Only the creator of time, one in control of the future can wwilt   make this statement.  Every thing God says always comes to pass, whether it is some thing good which we must follow or an evil which we must avoid but whether helpful, to gain, or harmful, to avoid, it is always for our good.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee=Isaiah 26:3

What part does the Holy Spirit play?

The function of the Spirit is to impress upon our minds that the Bible is the very Word and Words of God and to

enlighten me as I read and study it.   There are many voices in the world today who in one way or another claim theSpirit speaks to them.  They will tell you that they don’t need the writing when they have the Spirit of God Himself.  They are immersed in God like the fellow on the beech who is immersed in the water.  As C S Lewis pointed out, if he wants to get to India he will need a map.  In the same way, if I want to be successful in this life and get to heaven when I die I need a written document. There is one other question.  How did the fellow get to the water in the first place?  I suppose he would need a map and a vehicle of some kind.  One other problem here is that Jesus said that the way to life is very narrow and only a few will find it but many will follow the broad way which will lead to death.  The way to life is spelled out in the Bible but I need to read it.  It is a little like a stop sign. You don’t have a lot of people deciding when or where to stop or whether to stop at all.  The sign says plainly STOP and it’s for every one.  His is how we should view the Bible.  It is true that there are difficult passages but not so many as some people who never read it think.  There is much that is not so difficult, especially the passages dealing with our eternal salvation.

There is then only one way to live and that is by the Word and words of God, reading and obeying the Bible, God’s Book to me as we read in Psalm 1:3: “And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season, his fruit also shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper”.
